Reading for 9/2

"You're a Muslim, Harry!"

We’re gonna try something a little different this week. We have for you a TV interview and an excerpt from a podcast conversation. Also included are additional materials referenced in these clips. But reading these is completely optional for anyone who wants to dig deeper.

How does the State conceptualize the genesis of its enemies? Here is a list of risk factors for violent extremism identified by former US diplomat Farah Pandith (who also mentions “hearing along cultural listening lines” and “the rise of hate”). We hope they will serve as a jumping off point for discussion.

– Under 30 years of age
– Experiencing crisis of identity
– “Who am I?”
– “How do I express who I am in the world?”
– Lacking of a sense of belonging
– The importance of peers, local community
– Seeking answers to questions
– The “Us vs. Them” mentality
– Questions of living more authentically
